Black soap has traditionally been used in West Africa as a remedy for many skin ailments, from discolouration and acne to eczema and rashes. It suits all skin types, including the most sensitive, and works on the face, body and scalp.

It is made with ash from roasted plantain skins — a good source of vitamins A and E — along with roasted cocoa pods, coconut oil, shea and cocoa butter. The soap is free of lye, which the plantain skin ash replaces. The cocoa pod ash provides the mildest form of exfoliation, gentle enough for every day.

It cleanses, exfoliates, de-oils and moisturises at once. There is no fragrance oil or essential oil in it — the earthy scent is the ash itself.

How to use it
Take a small amount in your hands or on a washcloth. Apply on skin, work up the lather and rinse. Following up with a body moisturiser is recommended. This is a concentrated formula - start with a small quantity to prevent over-cleansing.

Your questions, answered

How much should I use?

Less than you think. It is a concentrated formula and lathers more than it looks like it will. Over-cleansing with it is the most common mistake.

Can I use it on my face?

Yes, though it is formulated primarily as a body and all-purpose cleanser. If your facial skin is dry or sensitive, patch test and start with two or three times a week.

Do I need to patch test?

Yes, and it takes a day. Apply a small amount to your inner forearm and leave it for 24 hours before using it on your face. Do this with any new product, not just ours.

How long does it keep?

The best-before period is printed on every label, counted from the date of manufacture. Store somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.
