Dryness & Barrier

Dryness & Barrier

Tight, flaky and suddenly reactive

Your skin's outer layer is a barrier of cells and lipids that holds water in and irritants out. When it's compromised, moisture escapes and everything stings — including products you were using comfortably a month ago. There's a useful distinction here: dry skin lacks oil,...

Sounds like

  • Skin feels tight for a while after washing
  • Flaking or rough patches, especially around the nose and cheeks
  • Products you've used for months suddenly sting or burn
  • Redness that comes and goes without an obvious trigger
  • Makeup clings to dry patches and looks uneven
  • Fine lines look deeper than they usually do

What might be causing it

  1. Over-cleansing, or foaming cleansers that strip natural oils

  2. Using too many actives, or using them too often

  3. Hot showers and long face washes

  4. Winter air, air-conditioning and low humidity

  5. Hard water leaving mineral residue on skin

  6. Naturally lower lipid production with age

  7. A tendency toward eczema or sensitive skin

  8. Starting retinoids or acids too strong, too fast

  9. Not drinking enough water, or a lot of caffeine and alcohol

A routine that works with it

Morning

  1. Rinse only

Water or a very gentle cleanser — no foaming wash in the morning

  2. Hydrate

A humectant serum applied to damp skin

  3. Moisturise

A richer cream while skin is still slightly wet

  4. Protect

    A hydrating broad-spectrum SPF, ideally cream-based

What helps day to day

Lifestyle

Turn the water temperature down, and keep a bowl of water in air-conditioned rooms or run a humidifier. Add omega-3 rich foods like flaxseed, walnuts and fish, and try not to sit directly under an AC vent for hours.

Skincare

Do less, not more. Pause all actives for two weeks, switch to a cream or oil-based cleanser once a day, and apply moisturiser to damp skin within a minute of washing. At night, layer a hydrating serum under a richer cream to seal it in.

Questions we get asked

What's the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?

Dry skin lacks oil and is usually a skin type you're born with. Dehydrated skin lacks water and is a temporary state anyone can experience, including people with oily skin. The two need slightly different things — oils for one, humectants for the other.

Can oily skin have a damaged barrier?

Yes, and it's common. Aggressive cleansing and over-exfoliation to control oil often damage the barrier, and skin responds by producing even more oil. Oily and dehydrated at the same time is a very normal combination.

Why do products I've used for years suddenly sting?

Stinging from familiar products is one of the clearest signs of a compromised barrier. It usually means it's time to strip your routine back to a gentle cleanser and a good moisturiser for a couple of weeks.

How long does barrier repair take?

Most people notice a real difference within one to two weeks of simplifying their routine. Deeper repair takes closer to a month.
