Turn to the ingredients list on beauty products, Xanthan gum can be found in everything from cleansers to masks, serums to peels. It is a popular ingredient for brands that produce organic skin care due to its natural origins.
Xanthan gum is polysaccharide created through fermentation of sugar (glucose, sucrose, or lactose) by plant bacteria called Xanthomonas campestris, and is later dried into a powder.
✔️ Even in a concentration of below 1%, Xanthan Gum can increase the viscosity notably, making its way into most natural/organic gel formulations.
✔️ With its ability to bind ingredients together, it is also used to stabilise and improve shelf-life for oil-in-water emulsions made with natural emulsifiers.
✔️Because of its capability to hold water, Xanthan Gum is also thought to have skin-conditioning properties.
✔️ It is not known to have any toxic or harmful side effects. According to EWG, xanthan gum is rated as a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest risk to health and 10 being the highest.
